Westendorp, Betsy

Born on December 14, 1927, in Madrid, Spain, Betsy Westendorp was raised within a prominent Spanish military family. Her father, General Carlos Westendorp, served in the Spanish Air Force, while her baptismal godmother and grandaunt was the famous Dutch watercolorist and etcher Betsy Westendorp-Osieck. Displaying a prodigious gift for portraiture from the age of 13, she took private lessons from an elite portraitist during her teens after her grandmother barred her from formal art academies out of a traditional fear of exposure to male nude models.

In 1951, at the age of 21, her life shifted globally when she married Antonio "Tony" Brias, an executive of the San Miguel Corporation, and relocated to Manila. Her arrival coincided with the intense post-war reconstruction of the Philippines, a landscape whose intense, radiant light permanently altered her canvas tones. Westendorp balanced raising three daughters with a covert painting practice that later broke out into a stellar global career.

Following her husband’s death in 1976 and a series of deep family losses, Westendorp divided her decades between her studios in Madrid and Manila, acting as a supreme cultural link between Spain and the Philippines. Passing away peacefully on November 23, 2022, in Aravaca on the outskirts of Madrid at the age of 94, Westendorp remains celebrated as a legendary matriarch of transatlantic art whose works captured both absolute power and fragile beauty.
