Born in 1969 in the mountain town of Mankayan, Benguet, Juan Franco Sabado developed a profound connection to the natural topographies of the Cordillera region early in life. Born to Ilocano parents, he grew up surrounded by Kankana-ey communities and spent critical teenage years living alongside Ifugao elders while working on his father's road construction projects. These deep, physical experiences within the highlands left an permanent mark on his creative identity.
Entirely self-taught, Sabado broke into the national consciousness in the early 1990s as a vital voice of the Baguio art community. He co-founded the influential Kalasag artist collective, working to decentralize Manila-centric institutional art and push indigenous aesthetics to the forefront of global contemporary dialogues. His technical precision and concept-driven focus earned him the prestigious Cultural Center of the Philippines Thirteen Artists Award in 2000, solidifying his status in the national canon. Represented across top-tier international bienniales spanning Australia, Japan, and China, Sabado continues to live and work in Baguio City, remaining an essential mentor and cultural pillar for the next generation of archipelagic creators.
