Muntadas, Antoni

Born in Barcelona, Spain, in 1942, Antoni Muntadas has lived and worked in New York since 1971, cultivating a formidable international practice that spans more than five decades. He received his formative technical foundations in Barcelona before emerging as one of the earliest and most rigorous practitioners of media-art installation on the global stage.

Muntadas’ nomadic, deeply collaborative practice operates on a global axis. He has achieved a towering academic legacy, holding long-term, prestigious professorships at top-tier research institutes and architectural academies across North America and Europe. Crucially, his investigative model has led him to execute major site-specific surveys in Southeast Asia. Between 2019 and 2023, he completed an extensive research residency in Manila, culminating in a historic collaboration with the Ateneo Art Gallery that traced the complex colonial and migratory links binding Spain, Mexico, and the Philippines through the historical lens of the Manila Galleon Trade.

Muntadas: Exercises on Past and Present Memories (2021–2023): A landmark collaborative project co-produced alongside the Ateneo Art Gallery (AAG) in Manila and the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo (CAAC) in Seville. Utilizing the historical framework of the Manila Galleon Trade, Muntadas designed three distinct conceptual presentes:

Mantónes de Manila: Fifteen traditional silk shawls hand-embroidered by master artisans in Lumban, Laguna, and Pampanga, featuring images detailing contemporary and historical political struggles (such as the 1986 EDSA Revolution and the drug war).

Malas Hierbas (Bad Weeds): A set of fine porcelain plates manufactured at the historic La Cartuja factory in Seville, bearing botanical drawings of invasive American plant species brought to the Philippines, serving as an explicit metaphor for the destructive environmental nature of colonialism.

Portable Monuments to Emigrant Anonymous Workers: A series of precious metal medallions and coins struck in Seville to honor the invisible labor, resilience, and economic contributions of modern Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) worldwide.

Informação-Espaço-Controle (2013): Mounted at the Estação Pinacoteca, São Paulo, Brazil.

About Academia (2011–2013): An institutional video and structural installation analyzing power hierarchies in higher education, debuted at Harvard University's Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts and traveled to the Audain Gallery, Vancouver.
