Biography

Born in Manila in 1957, Maria Cruz began her formal art education at the University of Santo Tomas (UST) before relocating to Australia in 1980. She completed her Bachelor of Visual Art (1983) and Postgraduate studies at the Sydney College of the Arts (SCA). In 1985, she expanded her practice to Europe, studying under the influential conceptualist Klaus Rinke at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in Germany, before ultimately returning to SCA to earn her Master of Visual Arts in 1999.

An exceptional academic and cultural organizer, Cruz balanced her studio practice with an intensive teaching career across Australian institutions, serving as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Western Sydney’s School of Contemporary Arts from 2000 to 2008. She splits her time between Berlin and Manila, and is represented by Sarah Cottier Gallery (Sydney) and The Drawing Room (Manila).
