Born on May 28, 1975, in Munich, Germany, Kidlat de Guia was the eldest son of National Artist for Cinema Kidlat Tahimik and cultural activist Katrin Müller-de Guia. He grew up in Baguio City, where cameras and darkrooms were treated as foundational tools for discovering individual ways of seeing the world. He earned his degree in Broadcast Communication from the University of the Philippines Diliman, where his production thesis, Kidlat Tahimik Vs The Trojan Idiot Box (1998), set the stage for his critical approach to mass media. A core figure in regional filmmaking and the national contemporary gallery circuit, de Guia split his time between high-profile broadcast editing and independent visual art. He passed away unexpectedly in his sleep in Madrid, Spain, in March 2022, while helping wrap up a major international exhibition of his father’s work. Major Awards & Milestones:2003: Earned the Award of Excellence at the Aqua Planet Video Festival (Seian University of Art and Design, Japan) for his film Banal Tubig, Banal Kahoy. 2001: Selected as the Philippine Winner for the Discovery Channel First Time Filmmakers Initiative for his Tribal Videos project. Ateneo Art Awards (2009): Shortlisted for the visual arts prize for his highly acclaimed solo installation, Sleeping White Elephants, at Galleria Duemila. Cinematography & Collaborative Work: Served as the key cinematographer and editor for his father’s epic historical film Balikbayan #1: Memories of Overdevelopment Redux III (2015), and edited the documentary Ang Lakaran ni Kabunyan. Selected Documentaries & Video Production:De Guia directed and edited numerous public-interest and socio-political video projects for media corporations and international development foundations, including the German Development Service (DED), Cartoon Network, and the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ):Sports for Peace (2007): Directed this film mapping out young youth-centered peace movements in Mindanao. Brewing Dreams (2007): Focused on small-scale organic coffee farming initiatives in the mountains. Papogi: The Imaging of Philippine Presidents (2004): Served as an editor for this landmark PCIJ documentary broadcast on ABS-CBN.
