Biography

Born on March 2, 1943, in Calbayog City, Samar, Raul G. Isidro is an indispensable institutional pillar of the post-war Philippine art movement. Raised amid the rugged landscapes and coastal vistas of the Visayas, he relocated to Manila to pursue his passion, eventually emerging as part of a legendary generation of modernists that redefined the local contemporary art map.

Beyond his prolific output as a painter, sculptor, and master printmaker, Isidro is highly celebrated for his immense contributions to art education and institutional leadership. He spent years cultivating grassroots creative communities, serving a vital tenure as the Dean of the College of Fine Arts at the Philippine Women's University (PWU) and later steering the national creative discourse as the President of the Art Association of the Philippines (AAP) from 2000 to 2006.

Education & Advanced Studies:

1965: Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) – University of Santo Tomas (UST), Manila (Studied under the foundational father of Philippine modernism, Victorio Edades, and modernist master Angelito Antonio).

1966: Postgraduate Studies in Painting – Philippine Women’s University (PWU), Manila.

1985: Advanced Art Course – Sonoma Community College, California, USA.

Institutional Honors & Distinctions:

National Artist Endorsement: Formally endorsed and nominated for the highest cultural order of the state—the National Artist Award (Orden ng Pambansang Alagad ng Sining)—via a unanimous official resolution by the Calbayog City Sangguniang Panlungsod.

2011: Recipient – Outstanding Samareño Award

2006: Recipient – Outstanding Thomasian Alumni Award for Fine Arts

1997: Recipient – Patnubay ng Sining at Kalinangan Award, Araw ng Maynila Celebration

1984: Commissioned Designer – Created five historic abstract commemorative postage stamps for the Philippine Post Office.

1979: Named one of The Ten Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) of the Philippines in the field of Fine Arts.

1972: Grand Award & First Prize – Printmakers Association of the Philippines (PAP) Annual Art Competition

2014: Raul Isidro Career Survey – Landmark retrospective held at the Ayala Museum, Makati City.

2007: Landscapes and Impressions – Staged at the Yellow Door Gallery, Power Plant Mall, Rockwell.

1970: Philippinische Malerei – Featured international showcase representing contemporary Philippine painting in Germany.

1969: Debut Solo Presentation – Staged at the historic La Solidaridad Gallery, launching his full-time art career with space-age abstractions inspired by the lunar landing.
