Biography

Born on March 11, 1934, in the rural town of Putat, Bagong Bayan, Cebu, Sofronio Y. Mendoza rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most respected painters and art educators of his generation. Drawn to illustration at an early age, he initially honed his skills through a self-supporting hustle before moving to Manila to find his artistic fortune. After a period of homelessness where he slept in Luneta Park and worked alongside lowbrow commercial painters on Mabini Street, his raw genius caught the eye of patrons who sponsored his formal university education. While studying, he initialed the back of his canvases with "S.Y.M." for easy identification, a shorthand that his peers instantly adopted as his permanent moniker. In 1981, at the peak of his domestic fame, SYM migrated with his family to Canada under a major commercial contract with the Heffel Gallery in Vancouver, building a cross-cultural creative bridges that endured until his passing on September 21, 2021. Founding members included intellectual giants and vanguards E. Aguilar Cruz, Ibarra de la Rosa, Andres Cristobal Cruz, and his brother-in-law Romulo Galicano. Dimasalang II (1970s): Formed to mentor and uplift his immediate students in Manila, including Carlos Cadid, Nestor Villanueva, Vic Larosa, and his younger brother Godofredo Mendoza. Dimasalang III International (1980s–Present): Registered as a prominent non-profit cultural society in British Columbia, Canada, organizing Filipino-Canadian diaspora creators like Edgardo Lantin, Rod Pedralba, and Noel Trinidad to promote regional plein air initiatives.
