Biography

Born on September 19, 1949, in Cavite, Imelda "Impy" Pilapil showed a natural talent for paper-folding and color harmonies from early childhood. She entered formal fine arts training in Manila during the late 1960s, studying classical anatomy and modern form under legendary masters before leaving the country to pursue advanced transnational specializations.

Pilapil’s multi-decade career seamlessly balances highly competitive gallery showcases with landmark state and municipal civil undertakings. Her work has earned her top titles on the international biennial circuit and positioned her as a vital visual ambassador for the Philippines across Asia and Europe. Based in her active studio atelier, she continues to execute large-scale, architectural-scale installations, remaining one of the most prolific and historically significant female voices in contemporary global sculpture.
