Biography

Born in Manila in 1955, Jack Sotto entered the professional visual arts scene during a highly experimental, anti-establishment peak of the local contemporary movement. He formalized his creative practice at the University of the Philippines (UP) College of Fine Arts, where he dedicated his studio research to the philosophies of non-representational painting.

Sotto’s early professional career was marked by instant, high-level institutional recognition. In 1979, his revolutionary handling of spatial form earned him an induction into the elite circle of the Thirteen Artists Award by the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP). This historic accolade permanently secured his status in the national vanguard alongside the iconic abstractionists of his generation. Throughout the late 1970s and mid-1980s, Sotto was a foundational presence across highly experimental exhibitions hosted at the CCP Small Gallery and progressive independent spaces like Sining Kamalig. His works, tracing decades of quiet, uncompromising painterly discipline, remain highly prized features within selective private modernist collections and early contemporary archives.
