Jay Ticar established his formidable creative foundations at the University of the Philippines (UP) College of Fine Arts, where he emerged as a stellar student of the legendary conceptual patriarch Roberto Chabet. Recognizing Ticar's affinity for avant-garde experimentation, Chabet personally curated and recommended his earliest breakthrough exhibitions, instantly embedding him within Manila’s alternative art scene. Eager to expand his research models, Ticar secured a full international scholarship in 2003 to pursue advanced multi-media and painting studies at Tama Art University in Tokyo, Japan. His years in Tokyo fundamentally expanded the material scale and socio-cultural depth of his studio projects.
Ticar's mid-career timeline is defined by high-level academic research and cross-border fellowships. As a recipient of the prestigious Asian Public Intellectual (API) Award, he completed a year-long research residency traversing Japan and Indonesia, analyzing the livelihood structures and systemic vulnerabilities defining contemporary artist identities. In 2017, his sonic and visual experiments earned him the Asia Centre Fellowship, allowing him to execute comprehensive field research on sound art movements across Japan, Vietnam, and Indonesia.
Upon returning to Manila, Ticar became a vital force organizing historical sound art celebrations and multi-media takeovers. Actively represented by elite spaces like The Drawing Room and Finale Art File, Ticar continues to decode the persistent psychological echoes of the post-pandemic landscape, standing as a premier contemporary architect of non-objective art.
