Born in Manila in 1931, Jose Tanig Joya entered the creative scene during a period of fierce friction between conservative academic artists and the emerging modern vanguards. He formalized his craft at the University of the Philippines (UP) College of Fine Arts, graduating in 1953 as the institution's first-ever magna cum laude graduate. His exceptional promise attracted elite international attention, earning him a one-year scholarship from the Instituto de Cultura Hispánica to study historical compositions in Madrid, Spain (1954–1955).

A turning point arrived when he secured a prestigious Fulbright-Smith-Mundt grant, allowing him to complete his Master of Fine Arts (MFA) at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan in 1956. This residency immersed him directly in the peak of the American Abstract Expressionist movement.
