Biography

Born on New Year's Day in 1912 in Cebu City, Manuel Rodriguez Sr. displayed a brilliant gift for design early in life, eventually moving to the capital to formalize his foundations at the University of the Philippines (UP) School of Fine Arts. His early career was heavily disrupted by the immense devastation of World War II. Facing a severe shortage of standard art supplies in post-war Manila, he began experimenting with alternative graphic mediums. In the 1950s, he produced a highly popular series of custom, hand-printed Christmas greeting cards depicting rural Filipino life, marking his pivotal transition into the graphic arts.

A major turning point arrived in 1960 when Rodriguez secured a prestigious study grant from the Rockefeller Foundation, allowing him to train at the renowned Pratt Graphic Art Center and the Central Design School in New York City. Immersed in the global graphic vanguards of the era, he mastered the complex chemical and mechanical laws of intaglio printmaking.

Upon returning to Manila, he dedicated himself to institutional development. He taught printmaking at the Philippine Women's University (PWU) and established his iconic San Andres workshop studio. In 1968, he founded the Philippine Association of Printmakers (PAP), mentoring an extraordinary powerhouse generation of largely female artists—including Brenda Fajardo, Ofelia Gelvezon-Tequi, Imelda Cajipe-Endaya, and Impy Pilapil—who elevated the medium nationwide.

In the late 1970s, Rodriguez relocated permanently to the United States, establishing the Contemporary Graphic Art Workshop in Manhattan, New York. Continuing to paint, pull prints, and mentor Filipino diasporic communities well into his advanced years, he passed away peacefully in 2017 at the legendary age of 105. Conferred the Presidential Medal of Merit in 2007, his legacy remains anchored as a towering master of artistic innovation.
