Born in 1924 in San Jose, Antique, Jeremias Elizalde Navarro grew up with a deep connection to Visayan traditions. His early talent earned him a slot at the University of Santo Tomas (UST) College of Architecture and Fine Arts, where he formalized his painting track, graduating in 1951 alongside fellow modernists. His education was heavily informed by early exposures to Japanese calligraphic brushwork and European avant-garde styles, which he seamlessly integrated with his background in corporate advertising layouts and graphic illustration.
Navarro’s mid-career trajectory was marked by continuous global travel and international representation. He achieved a rare historic hat-trick representing the country at the prestigious São Paulo Bienal across three separate decades (1967, 1971, and 1980). A transformative period spent living and working in Bali during the late 20th century permanently brightened his palette, resulting in a monumental series of figurative ink works and canvases that celebrated Balinese rituals and women.
Passing away in June 1999, he was posthumously proclaimed a National Artist by state decree that same year. Navarro’s legacy has seen exceptional institutional celebration, highlighted by the monumental, traveling centennial retrospective Halángdon: The Art and Legacy of National Artist J. Elizalde Navarro launched by the National Museum of the Philippines, running through 2025 and 2026 to introduce his rare prints and sculptures to new generations.
