Biography

Born in 1892 in Paco, Manila, Fernando Amorsolo spent his earliest childhood years in Daet, Camarines Norte, where his love for the rural landscapes and the intense Bicolano sun was deeply established. Following his father’s early death, his family returned to Manila, where his mother secured a position for him as an apprentice under his maternal uncle, the celebrated master painter Fabian de la Rosa. This early guidance sharpened his draftsmanship before he enrolled as one of the pioneer students of the University of the Philippines (UP) College of Fine Arts, graduating with top honors in 1914.

Amorsolo’s international breakout was catalyzed by the prominent industrialist Enrique Zóbel de Ayala, who sponsored a comprehensive scholarship for him to study at the prestigious Academia de San Fernando in Madrid, Spain, in 1919. While in Europe, Amorsolo studied the brushwork of Diego Velázquez and contemporary impressionists like Joaquín Sorolla, whose manipulation of brilliant Mediterranean light profoundly altered Amorsolo's approach to the canvas.

Returning to Manila, Amorsolo built a monumental career as a commercial illustrator, portraitist, and long-serving Dean of the UP College of Fine Arts (1938–1952). He was an incredibly prolific painter, sometimes producing multiple canvases a week to meet the fierce demands of American tourists, local tycoons, and international collectors. In 1972, four days after his passing due to heart failure at the age of 79, he was officially proclaimed the first National Artist of the Philippines by state decree. Today, his market status remains unparalleled, with his historic compositions repeatedly shattering international records.
