Biography

Born in Canada in 1980, Jay Yao spent his early youth traversing boundaries, raised with one foot in Vancouver's migrant communities and the other within Manila’s vibrant cultural landscapes. He formalized his intellectual and technical artistic foundations in the United States, pursuing a Bachelor of Arts at Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts, where his historic 2003 thesis photography presentation concentrated on Canadian-Asian identity. Seeking to sharpen his graphic system capabilities, he later earned an advanced degree from the Parsons School of Design in New York City in 2013, alongside pursuing further specialized coursework at Columbia University.

Yao’s early professional career was marked by strategic international sponsorships and high-profile institutional selections. In his youth, he was sponsored by the Canadian and Mexican embassies, culminating in an exhibition requested by the Mexican Embassy to mark 150 years of Mexican influence across the Philippine archipelago. In 2005, he represented the Philippines for the Goethe-Institut’s traveling contemporary art network, Art ConneXions: SYD-MLA-KUL.

Yao's breakout studio milestone arrived with his Homecoming series, which was highly acclaimed by national visual juries and earned a shortlist selection for the Ateneo Art Awards in 2014. Actively exhibiting across premium contemporary platforms like Silverlens and Artinformal, his works are preserved within elite global collections, including the Imago Mundi Collection (Fondazione Benetton Studi Ricerche) in Italy and the Asia Society in New York City.
