Biography

Born in 1944, Virgilio “Pandy” Aviado is one of the most prominent figures in Philippine contemporary art. He began his artistic journey under the esteemed mentorship of Araceli Dans and the "Father of Philippine Printmaking," Manuel Rodriguez, Sr., before further honing his craft through formal studies at the University of Santo Tomas (UST) and the Philippine Women’s University (PWU).

A cornerstone of the local art community, Aviado has played a vital role in nurturing the Philippine art ecosystem. He is a founding member of the Ateneo Art Gallery Arts Club and has spent his career actively supporting the growth of the visual arts nationwide. His exceptional talent, versatility, and lifelong dedication have culminated in numerous local and international exhibitions, awards, and accolades.

Career Highlights:

Global Recognition: Recognized internationally as one of the top ten printmakers in the world.

Mentorship & Training: Formally educated at UST and PWU; mentored early in his career by Araceli Dans and Manuel Rodriguez, Sr.

Peer Collaborations: Worked alongside legendary modern masters and Philippine National Artists, including Cesar Legaspi, Jose Joya, Anita Magsaysay-Ho, and Fernando Zobel.

Leadership & Advocacy: Founding member of the Ateneo Art Gallery Arts Club; deeply dedicated to teaching and promoting accessible printmaking techniques to new generations of artists.

Multidisciplinary Practice: While renowned for his prints, he possesses a diverse and widely exhibited portfolio that includes paintings, drawings, and mixed media works.
