Sakuma, Wataru

Biography

Wataru Sakuma's unique aesthetic sensibilities were shaped by a highly nomadic childhood, spending his early formative years navigating five countries, including Japan, Dubai, India, and the United States. He pursued formal fine arts training in the US, focusing heavily on painting before undergoing a profound material reorientation that led him irreversibly to paper. In 2004, a serendipitous journey brought him to the Philippines, where he permanently embedded himself within the local creative ecosystem.

In Manila, Sakuma joined Masa Ecological Development Inc. (MASAECO), an eco-social enterprise located in Carasuchi, Cavite, dedicated to generating rural employment through advanced handmade papermaking. Rising to helm the company as Chairman and Creative Director, he turned the workshop into an international hub for ecological product design. A multi-decorated icon of design diplomacy, Sakuma has served as a strategic consultant for the Philippine Department of Trade and Industry (CITEM) and the government of Thailand, continuously championing Southeast Asian craftsmanship on global exhibition platforms spanning Tokyo, Paris, Milan, and Singapore.
