Biography

Born in Iloilo and raised along the coastal lines and riverbeds of Panay Island, Joar Songcuya’s life has been permanently shaped by water. Growing up in a working-class rural family heavily impacted by migration—his mother spent over 15 years working abroad as a domestic helper—Songcuya pursued a career as a marine engineer to serve as his family's breadwinner. For ten years, he navigated global shipping trade lanes on commercial vessels. To process the grueling shifts in the ship's engine room and cope with deep isolation, he packed his luggage with art supplies, teaching himself to paint inside his tiny cabin. The turning point in Songcuya's creative trajectory came during the global shutdowns of the COVID-19 pandemic. With shipping temporarily paused, he risked his savings to commit entirely to full-time painting. His candid, socially relevant documentations of sea life intensely resonated with the regional and international art worlds. By 2025 and 2026, Songcuya successfully moved from being an underground self-taught discovery to representing the country on top-tier global museum platforms, including the Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW) in Berlin and the Jameel Arts Centre in Dubai. Represented prominently in the selective ALT Philippines 2026 Discoveries platform under Galleria Duemila, he continues to live and work in the Philippines, widely celebrated as a crucial contemporary voice mapping out the intersection of modern art and maritime labor.
