Born in Manila, Roberto Chabet initially trained as an architect, graduating with a degree in Architecture from the University of Santo Tomas (UST) in 1961. That very same year, he held his landmark first solo exhibition at the esteemed Luz Gallery in Manila, launching an unparalleled five-decade career as an artist, institutional leader, curator, and educator. Beyond his personal studio practice, Chabet was the primary architect of the country's contemporary art ecosystem. As a legendary educator, he spent over thirty years mentoring generations of vanguard artists at the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman College of Fine Arts, leaving an indelible mark on the country's creative landscape. Key Curatorial & Leadership Milestones:Founding CCP Museum Director (1967–1970): Served as the very first director of the Cultural Center of the Philippines museum, establishing its early contemporary direction. The Thirteen Artists Award: Pioneered and established this highly prestigious award system to recognize and empower young, experimental artists who broke away from past traditions. Shop 6 Leader: Founded and led the historic, artist-run conceptual collective Shop 6 during the Martial Law period, providing a crucial alternative space for radical artistic expression alongside figures like Joy Dayrit, Joe Bautista, and Rodolfo Gan.
