Born on March 13, 1956, in Dumangas, Iloilo, Rock Drilon is an institutional pillar of Philippine abstraction. He pursued his formal fine arts training at the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman, where he was mentored by National Artist José Joya. He emerged during a golden era of local abstraction alongside influential contemporaries like Gus Albor, Roy Veneracion, and Nestor Vinluan.
In Manila, Drilon established himself not only as a formidable painter but also as a vital bohemian organizer, co-founding the legendary Mag:net Gallery in Quezon City—a critical multi-disciplinary safe haven for the city's writers, musicians, and visual creators. In 2012, Drilon made a historic decision to leave the capital and return permanently to his roots in Iloilo. Operating out of his Dumangas studio retreat, he has spent the last decade spearheading a massive cultural renaissance across the Western Visayas. From managing art initiatives to establishing the Dumangas Community Library in 2025, Drilon continues to cultivate a powerful grassroots legacy.
