Biography

Born in 1962 in Kidapawan, North Cotabato, Emmanuel Garibay is an influential Filipino master painter and cultural advocate. He sharpened his formal artistic sensibilities at the University of the Philippines Diliman, graduating with a degree in Fine Arts. Rather than confining his education to the academy, Garibay engaged in an intensive, self-directed study of both European and Philippine masters, developing a highly sophisticated cross-cultural visual vocabulary.

Garibay's career is deeply rooted in grassroots cultural movements. During the politically turbulent mid-1980s, he became a core member of the progressive collective Artista ng Bayan (People’s Artists), a formative experience that permanently aligned his studio practice with the struggles of the marginalized. Since mounting his debut solo exhibition in 1993, Garibay has built an immense international profile, exhibiting and lecturing extensively across Asia, Europe, and the United States.
