Biography

Born in the historic district of Ermita, Manila, in 1941, Rodolfo Samonte entered the visual arts scene during a golden, highly revolutionary era of Philippine modernism. He formalized his craft at the University of Santo Tomas in the early 1960s, a period when the academy was under the visionary direction of Victorio Edades. Under the direct guidance of master professors Galo Ocampo and Cenon Rivera, Samonte absorbed the strict rules of line and form while quickly developing an independent craving for unconventional, fast-drying mediums.

His breakout silkscreens caught the eye of legendary artist-gallerist Arturo Luz, leading to a long-running partnership at the historic Luz Gallery that established Samonte as an essential name in geometric modernism. In 1974, he stood as the lone printmaker chosen to represent the Philippines in the historic ASEAN traveling art exhibition across Southeast Asian capitals.

Seeking new creative horizons, Samonte migrated to the United States in 1979, settling in Burbank, California. There, he successfully transitioned into the advertising industry, a move that allowed him to master early digital graphic systems. Retiring from commercial work in 1998 to return to full-time art-making, he co-founded the Southern California art collective Lanterns of the East, establishing a sweeping international footprint that spans decades of transcontinental creation.
