Born in Manila in 1956, Jose Tence Ruiz grew up navigating the dense urban landscapes and historical shifts of the postwar capital. He formalized his craft at the University of Santo Tomas (UST) College of Fine Arts and Architecture during the highly charged political atmosphere of the 1970s. Graduating with honors in 1979, he established an early reputation as a fierce, anti-establishment illustrator, serving as a political cartoonist for radical alternative publications like Who? and National Midweek during the Marcos martial law era.
From 1988 to 1995, Tence Ruiz relocated to Singapore, working as an Executive Artist for The Straits Times. This period of migration deeply sharpened his empathy for the regional migrant worker crisis, providing a global framework that he brought back to the Philippines.
In 2015, his international reputation reached a historical pinnacle when he was chosen to create a landmark installation representing the Philippine Pavilion at the 56th Venice Biennale, marking the country's triumphant return to the global exhibition stage after a 51-year absence. Having celebrated 50 years of continuous studio practice through a comprehensive institutional exhibition at the Ateneo Art Gallery, Tence Ruiz lives and works in Metro Manila, remaining a vital, highly influential mentor, curator, and cultural critic across the Asia-Pacific region.
