Born in Macabebe, Pampanga, in 1910, Vicente Silva Manansala moved to Manila at a young age, immediately feeling the energetic rhythms of the urban landscape. He formalized his artistic training at the University of the Philippines (UP) College of Fine Arts, graduating in 1933 during a period when conservative realism still dominated academic classrooms. Recognizing that his artistic vision required international perspective, he pursued advanced transnational scholarships throughout the mid-20th century. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under the French master Fernand Léger (1950), refined his brushwork at the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles (1960), and completed specialized graphic modules at the Banff School of Fine Arts in Canada (1949).
Returning to the Philippines, Manansala became an irreplaceable pillar of the modernist vanguard. Alongside fellow revolutionaries Hernando R. Ocampo and Cesar Legaspi, he formed the "Neo-Realists," a group that boldly expanded the parameters of abstract configuration in the archipelago. He also served as a highly influential professor at the University of Santo Tomas (UST) College of Architecture and Fine Arts, mentoring subsequent masters like Ang Kiukok.
In his later years, seeking a reprieve from Manila's noise, he retreated to a hilltop studio home in Binangonan, Rizal, where he continued to capture local flora and landscapes until his passing from lung cancer in 1981. Conferred the supreme title of National Artist that same year, Manansala’s legacy remains permanently preserved within international collections, including the National Gallery Singapore and the National Museum of Fine Arts in Manila.
