Sanso, Juvenal

Born in Reus, Spain, in 1929, Juvenal Sansó was only five years old when his family relocated to the Philippines in 1934 to escape the rising political instability that led to the Spanish Civil War. Settling in Manila, his father established a successful wrought-iron business. However, the serene childhood Sansó enjoyed was violently shattered by the outbreak of World War II. During the Japanese Occupation, the family home was burned to the ground, Sansó was subjected to physical torture by soldiers, and a nearby artillery blast left him partially deaf—a severe physical and psychological trauma that haunted his early studio productions. Following the war, Sansó rejected ironworking to pursue his true calling in the arts. He enrolled at the University of the Philippines (UP) School of Fine Arts, studying classical realism under master professors Fernando Amorsolo, Guillermo Tolentino, and Dominador Castañeda. Seeking global horizons, he moved to Europe in 1951, completing advanced figurative programs at the Academia di Belle Arti in Rome and the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he established a primary base for several decades. Sansó’s exceptional multi-decade output earned him a rare, historic hat-trick of sovereign state recognitions across three nations: the Presidential Medal of Merit from the Philippines (2006), the Distinguished King's Cross of Isabela from King Juan Carlos I of Spain (2007), and the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from France (2008). Passing away peacefully on March 28, 2025, at the age of 95, his immense artistic and charitable legacy continues to be preserved, authenticated, and shared globally by Fundación Sansó in San Juan, Metro Manila.
