Benedicto “BenCab” Cabrera is a National Artist of the Philippines and one of the country’s most celebrated contemporary artists. Known for his expressive and dynamic figures, particularly his iconic subject Sabel, BenCab explored themes of isolation, resilience, and the struggles of the marginalized, crafting a symbol that serves as both a personal muse and a form of social commentary.
In the 1960s, BenCab emerged as a key figure in Philippine art, known for his expressive figurative style that combined fluid lines, rich textures, and a deep sensitivity to Filipino life and culture.
With numerous exhibitions held both locally and internationally, BenCab has received many prestigious honors, including the Presidential Medal of Merit and the title of National Artist for Visual Arts in 2006. In 2009, he founded the BenCab Museum in Baguio, a space dedicated to Philippine contemporary art and cultural heritage. His lifelong advocacy for the arts, environment, and cultural preservation cements his legacy as one of the country’s most influential and respected artists.
