Alvin Villaruel (b. April 18, 1975) is a Filipino painter known for his luminous, contemplative works that blend painting and photographic elements. A graduate of the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts (1998), he introduced techniques such as photo-paintings, smudges, and blur effects into his largely figurative/abstract practice. Villaruel came from a generation of young artists who intensified Philippine contemporary art in the late ’90s and early 2000s. His repertoire of works evokes light, memory, and subtle emotional resonance, with pieces that often draw from personal imagery and photographic sources.
