Luis “Junyee” Yee Jr. (b. 1942, Agusan del Norte), more widely-recognized by his artistic moniker “Junyee,” has made Los Baños, Laguna the locus of his creative practice for most of his career. A seminal figure in Philippine contemporary art, Junyee was among the first of his generation to courageously mount exhibitions utilizing indigenous materials—pushing the boundaries of artistic medium, site, and meaning. Celebrated as the father of Installation and Indigenous Art in the Philippines, he transformed nature into both his subject and medium, dissolving the boundary between the environment and artistic expression. His Mindanaoan roots remain deeply embedded in his practice, informing his instinctive use of organic and locally-sourced materials. This grounding in place and identity enabled him to depart from conventional, object-centered art forms, creating site-specific installations that merge the spiritual, the natural, and the political into a cohesive vision.
